Girl I Was

I think I got that proverb right… I’m a bit overwhelmed today.

You may perhaps have noticed that I quietly and without fanfare released the first single from my album today. It’s called Girl I Was and although it’s been described as angry and bitter I prefer to see it as part pain and part power. It is somewhat autobiographical although I will not reveal which lines are real and which are fictional, unless you ask me when I’m in a particularly bad mood. Thank you to Daniel Knowles (producer/guitars/synths) and Jorge Balbi (drums) for perfectly incorporating the influences I mentioned and giving the song a whole new life.

The video for Girl I Was features excerpts from the 1978 ‘Play Safe’ public safety announcements of the late 1970s – permission was given to use them by the British Film Institute (from the goodness of their wallets). The video as a whole was directed and produced by my talented, perceptive and wonderful nieces – Yashi and Loveday Richens-Erturan. With help from the resilient and good-natured Ethan Skinner, we traipsed across marshland and swung about on pylons in East London and Essex. I think I succeeded in looking haunting and chaotic, especially in the bit where I genuinely fell over and scraped my knees (it stayed in the video, so watch out for that). Thank you so much Girl I Was Video Team for making it look better than I ever hoped and for being so patient with me. And a special mention to my sister Keda for feeding and looking after me in London as she has so many times before.

The PR agency in LA has got me some features with online music blogs/magazines and on some playlists so I’m hoping that’ll grow my following a little. And there are more singles to come, but I won’t say more about them yet.

For now, enjoy Girl I Was and have fun making your own ex-partner monologues.

All my love, Rosalie x
